Writer’s Idea Box: Body Talk

You may have said it today: Oh! My back is talking to me! or My dogs are barking!

Not only does the body send us signals constantly, moment to moment, keeping us safe, warm, and fed, it also remembers!

Try putting your hand on the back of you neck for a minute. Close your eyes. What sense memories emerge? For me, it’s the time my son jumped into the pool, into my arms without warning and cracked my neck or the time my husband slipped from the boat ladder above me onto my head, cracking my neck. I could go on.

In this Writer’s Idea Box, you’ll work with the body, listening to its various parts for prompts and write in poetic or prosaic form about what you hear.

Honestly, you could probably get a full length memoir manuscript from doing just this one exercise.

Try it! Let me know how it goes.

Namaste,
